چکیده

This review article summarises some of the contributions presented at the 40th Anniversary Conference of the International Association for Danube Research (IAD) held in Sofia, 17-20 June 2014. The current volume of Acta zoologica bulgarica, Supplement 7, comprises 31 contributions covering seven of the nine conference topics, one project review and three papers devoted to the memory of the respected Bulgarian hydrobiologists, including their bibliography related to the Danube River. The contributions focus on a wide range of current issues, such as bacterial, plant and animal diversity, ecosystem services, climate change and invasive alien species, the implementation of the Water Framework Directive, and sustainable development in the Danube River Basin. The results demonstrate the achievements of the scientific community and the potential for scientific cooperation within the frame of IAD.
